The American victories in World War II and the Cold War established the U.S. as “the last, best hope for man on earth.” Freedom’s cause in every part of the world depends upon a strong America. When our country is secure, we can advance American security abroad with greater confidence.

An America First approach to national security ensures that power is used in the interest of the American people. Instead of falling in line with Washington’s increasingly obsolete foreign and defense policy orthodoxy, our foreign policy should reflect an authentically American approach to new problems, new threats, and established alliances.

The U.S. has a unique role in the world, and our Nation has an unmatched ability to do best for others when its people are strong, safe, and prosperous. An America First approach demands that any commitments of American lives or dollars abroad come with concrete benefits for the American people.

To strengthen national security, we must establish an America First foreign policy. This type of diplomacy prioritizes working with nations that contribute their fair share to important alliances and share our commitment to deterring adversaries.

We must also maintain the world’s most powerful military force and return our Armed Forces to their core missions of deterrence and warfighting. Additionally, we must pursue a bold new path to peace and prosperity in the Middle East and hold China accountable for its aggression against its neighbors, lack of transparency, and other actions.

By focusing on these priorities, the U.S. can ensure that its approach to national security keeps America first in foreign affairs and protects our citizens from international threats while not over-extending itself economically or militarily at the expense of the American people. As the innovative approach of America First foreign policy during the previous administration has shown, America can defend itself and play a leading role in the world by avoiding new wars, brokering historic peace agreements, and fostering equal and fair burden sharing with our friends and partners.
